Homemade Video: B&S “I fought in a war”

I’ve been discovering Belle and Sebastian, first through Rhapsody, and now on YouTube.  Often compared to The Smiths, their breadth and talent and even their sound — judging by the growth throughout their career — remind me of the Beatles.  Sometimes, a Beatles/Simon and Garfunkel mix.  Others may come to mind.

Here’s a YouTube homemade video of one of their more popular songs.

I Fought in a War

And another, which I thought about posting as a 5GW-related song; but this is an actual video from the group:

A Century of Fakers

These may not support the Beatles/S&G comparison, however…! ;) Their song, “Take Your Carriage Clock and Shove It” (lyrics) has a very Simon & Garfunkel sound, imo, but unfortunately I don’t have a link to the actual music. Belle and Sebastian are often called melancholic, and they are, but not always in a sad, teenage way; their wit and authenticity often remind me of, say, S&G’s Sound of Silence. Songs like “I’m a Cuckoo” remind me of some of Lennon’s solo songs, a bit of the Beatles. But mostly, the Beatles impression comes from the range, the talent of the music and lyric creation, etc.

Comments

I liked it. It definetley had a 60's folk/britpop sound.
